Manageability
Network topology changes (adds, removes, new services) should be easy and quick to implement
- Should create a minimum of disruption to existing customers
- Inexpensive, incremental
- Flexible: able to match provided service close to requirements
Network components should be
- Independent from each other - failure should not impact whole network
Status of network should be readily obtainable to aid troubleshooting
- I.E. You need to be able to tell what's going on reliably
Network should be redundant; provide alternative pathways to protect against single points of failure
Traffic patterns should be readily obtainable to allow planning and restructuring where needed
